Dress Codes

LaSalle Parish Schools– Grades 6 – 12

POLICY:

The dress and grooming of LaSalle Parish students shall be neat and clean, promoting a positive, safe educational environment.  Apparel that disrupts educational activities and processes of the school, including extra-curricular activities, will result in the removal of the student from the regular school environment until acceptable apparel can be secured for the student.  The administration will be the final judge of whether a student’s clothing is appropriate for school.  Principals, faculty, and staff members will enforce the dress code. 
 

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

  1. All shirt and blouses must cover the midriff (while sitting and arms raised), back, sides, chest, and all undergarments. Blouses/shirts which are not appropriate for school include those which are low cut, see-through, backless, halter tops, tube tops, spaghetti straps and tank tops.
  2. All shirts, tops, and dresses shall cover the shoulders.
  3. Shirts worn by boys must have sleeves and must be tucked in with a belt visible.
  4. All clothing must be hemmed.
  5. Shorts must be no shorter than six (6) inches above the knee. Skirts, divided skirts, dresses and culottes can only be four (4) inches above the knee. These garments will be measured with students kneeling. No gym shorts allowed except during PE time.
  6. All trousers, pants, or shorts must be size appropriate, worn at the waist, and cover undergarments, including boxer shorts. No chains allowed on pants.
  7. All clothing, jewelry, accessories, and personal items shall be free of the following: profanity, violent images, wording or suggestion, sexually suggestive phrases or images, gang related symbols, alcohol, tobacco, drugs or advertisements for such products, and anything else disruptive to the educational process or learning environment. Only chains purchased and suitable as jewelry are allowed.
  8. Clothing not properly buttoned, zipped, fastened, or with holes or tears shall not be allowed. Length of trousers shall not be dragging the floor.
  9. Extremely tight fitting clothing is not allowed.
  10. Jogging suits or knit warm up pants, including windsuits, may be worn only in PE classes. 
  11. Hats, caps, head covers, scarves, head rags, "do rags", stocking caps, combs, picks, and head or wrist bands are not permitted.
  12. Safe and appropriate footwear must be worn. Inappropriate footwear includes, but is not limited to: cleated shoes, skates, skate shoes, bedroom slippers, steel toed boots, and rubber flip flops.
  13. Trench coats are not allowed.
  14. Students' hair must be groomed in such a manner that it will not draw undue attention and/or distract from the educational process. Hair must be kept neat, clean, and with no disruptive styles or colors. 
  15. Sunglasses and shades are not allowed at school.
  16. Boys are not allowed to wear earrings. Nose, facial, and/or forms of body piercings are allowed for anyone.
  17. Clothing must be safe and appropriate.
  18. The display of tattoos is prohibited; tattoos must remain covered when possible. Tattoos which reflect any of the items noted in #7 above must be covered.
  19. The display of body piercing is prohibited with the exception of ear piercing for females.

BODY ARMOR

It shall be unlawful and against School Board policy for any student or non student to wear or possess on his/her person, at any time, body armor on any school board property, school campus, at a school-sponsored function, on a school bus or other school transportation, or in a firearm-free zone, with limited exception as enumerated in La. Rev. Stat. Ann. 14:95.9. School-sponsored functions shall include, but not be limited to, athletic competitions, dances, parties, or any extracurricular activities. A firearm- free zone means any area within one thousand feet of any school campus and within a school bus. Body armor shall mean bullet resistant metal or other material intended to provide protection from weapons or bodily injury. 
 
The School Board shall notify all students of the provisions of this policy.
 

Dress Code Violations

Students who violate the dress code shall be disciplined in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
 
A student enrolled in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 5th shall not e suspended or expelled from school or suspended from riding on any school bus for a uniform violation that is not tied to willful disregard of school policies. 
 

EMPLOYEE DRESS CODE

DRESS CODE POLICY FOR ALL SCHOOL EMPLOYEES

(ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS, PARAPROFESSIONALS, SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS, AND CLERICAL PERSONNEL)
 
LaSalle Parish teachers and administrators have traditionally upheld high standards of professionalism, including that of appropriate, professional attire. In accordance with that tradition, the LaSalle Parish School System embraces the following standards as they relate to teacher and administrator dress.
 
The standards of dress and provisions of this policy are applicable to teachers, administrators, substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, and any others who have responsibilities for the instruction of children, as well as to clerical personnel. These standards also apply to employees at the Central Office, Media Center, Special Education Office, Alternative School, and any other off-campus facilities.
 
  1. All employees should dress appropriately and in good taste with a manner consistent with their particular responsibilities.
  2. Spirit Days will be designated by the principal.  Blue jeans may be worn on Spirit Days.
  3. The following attire is prohibited in academic classrooms and offices.
  4.        This list is not intended to be all-inclusive.
  5.         a. Blue jeans except on Spirit Days
  6.         b. T-shirts except on Spirit Days
  7.         c. Wind suits except on Spirit Days
  8.         d. Sweat shirts except on Spirit Days
  9.         e. Form-fitting or revealing clothing, including leggings worn as slacks and low-cut blouses
  10.         f. Any shorts above the knee
  11.         g. Fleece jogging suits
            h. Tank shirts
  12.         i. All flip flops (defined as flat, with toe strap making a “Y”)
  13.         j. Short skirts (skirts should reach top of knee)
  14. During special activities such as field trips, and other similar events, teachers and administrators may be exempted from the prohibitions, but are requested to adhere to standards of good taste.
  15. Certain areas of instruction such as physical education are exempted from prohibition on shorts, jogging suits, and sweat suits while teaching physical education.  However, coaches or others should wear outer pants or wind suits when going into instructional settings.
  16. Men, especially those in administration, are encouraged to wear ties.  Dress slacks with polo style shirts or sports shirts may also be worn.  Shirts must be tucked in at all times.
  17. Employees performing duty at ball games and/or other extracurricular activities shall dress in a manner befitting their profession or befitting the occasion (which may require work-type clothes, as approved by the principal).
NOTE:    The direct supervisor is responsible for enforcing the dress code.
 
The Administration will be the final judge whether a staff member’s clothing is appropriate for school.
